What do you do?

My job scope is basically to optimise the cement plant operation process – enhancing continuous equipment reliability, establishing inspection system for the equipment and coordinating Plant Maintenance activities with the supporting maintenance team. My responsibilities include leading the production engineering team to improvise overall key performance and the reliability factor of equipment desired output.

How did you get here?

I completed my Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Pursuing a career in the plant operations line has been my ultimate interest because it creates a holistic-minded engineer with hands-on and theoretical practice of engineering. Subsequently, through my extensive reading and research, I realised that the cement industry proved to be a good platform to nurture my skills and knowledge. One of the main reasons that I decided to pursue a career in this industry is because I am passionate about field-based jobs and I expect tough technical challenges.

Why do you do it?

Facing technical challenges related to plant operations and providing solutions to those issues are the main factors that motivates me daily. I love the job and industry as it really keeps me actively thinking about holistic improvements for the plant operations. On top of that, my colleagues and team are an extremely fun bunch to work with. The company also provides me with a great platform for career development as it supports the extra needs of a professional engineer and management development.

Who should do it?

A fun and adventurous person would surely fit the job. It’s important to have the following: esteemed leadership skills, a strong analytical mind and the ability to cope under high pressure are essential in this industry.

From a personality and interest perspective, I would say a desire to provide solutions, applied creativity and technical problem-solving skills would be necessary in this job.

Where can you work?

Basically an engineer from this field will be highly sought after in the heavy industry, petrochemical industry and also in oil and gas. An engineer with solid experience and expertise in this field would fit into any organisation, be it multinational or local.
