What is it?

Graduates will be competent in functioning as optometrists who examine the eye for optical defects and attempt to correct defects by prescribing corrective lenses (spectacles and contact lenses).

You will start off with general science studies and then move on to the specific realm of visual science. Through your studies, you will be able to pursue a career in optometric research and teaching or clinical optometric practice.

What will you study?

You will basically learn about eyes and methods to care for them in this course. You will study visual defects and learn how to correct or relieve them. The course is divided into several main areas: basic science and clinical knowledge, clinical skills, optics and optical appliances, and professional skills. 

The curriculum covers all aspects of assessing functional disorders of the eye and visual systems (such as short or long sight); and training on methods of counselling people who need of eye surgery.

Core subjects 

Abnormal ocular conditions; clinical biology of the visual system; human biology; neuroscience; occupational optometry; optics and visual optics; optometric pharmacology and microbiology; ophthalmic lasers for surgical correction of visual defects; visual perception.

Typical course duration

It takes at least three years to complete a degree in optometry.

Entry requirements 

Prior study of and good grades in biology, physics, chemistry (and preferably mathematics) are required.

What do graduates do? 

You can work as an optometrist, researcher, consultant, salesperson or lecturer.
