Introduction

The Malaysian Matriculation Programme (commonly referred to as Matrikulasi) is a popular route into university. As a pre-university programme in its own right, the Malaysian Matriculation Programme is a hot ticket because it only requires a registration fee of RM255– the rest is fully sponsored by the Malaysian government.

Duration

There are 2 types of Matriculation programmes:

  • 1 Year Programme*
    (Takes place over 2 semesters)

  • 2 Year Programme**
    (Takes place over 4 semesters)

* Offered to both Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera students.
** Offered to Bumiputera students only.

Approximately 10% of places within the Malaysian Matriculation Programme are offered to non-Bumiputera students.

Intakes

The intakes for the Malaysian Matriculation Programme depend on the programme type. The intake for the 1 Year Programme (Program Satu Tahun or PST) is in April of each year, whereas the intake for the 2 Year Programme (Program Dua Tahun or PDT) is in May.

Structure & assessment

All in all, there are 3 streams for students to choose from:

  • Accounting Stream
  • Science Stream
  • Technical Stream

While all streams are available to students who have enrolled in the 1 Year Programme, only Science Stream students can enrol in the 2 Year Programme, which utilises the same syllabus offered in the 1 Year Programme. The difference is that students in the 2 Year Programme will be taught the syllabus over the course of 2 years.

Students are assessed via end-of-semester exams. The exams account for 70% to 80% of the scores for core subjects, and 50% of the score for the English Language paper. The rest of the final scores are contributed by lab work and assignments.

The grading system used by the Malaysian Matriculation Programme is the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)system which is implemented in many public and private universities.
